If some one was to ask me for Career advise, especially concerning Internet, I would definitely advise one thing - Work for a startup..atleast once in your professional life!
My prior experience in Established companies has also been good enough..but when youwork for a start up where virtually every job lands at your desk..the learning is awesome!
We started working on Extramarks.com 6 months back. With SN moving out to Reuters, I was also quite open to looking out of HT. Met a guy - Rohit Jain who was looking for some one to head an online startup on education..Rohit came across to me as a super intelligent guy! Somehow our chemistry clicked and I ended up joining Extramarks. It was not named like that. A (rare ;-) ) brainwave led me to this name which got universal approval including that of our chairman - Mr. Atul Kulshrestha. Rohit is now the CEO.
We hired a company called Image websolutions which despite many weaknesses, did deliver to us a project with multiple functionalities. Praveen lohani & I created lots of Project Requirement diagrams (PRDs) that made the lives of the tech team quite miserable ( due to quantum of work) and easy ( defining a thing clearly helps a techie a lot).
About 3 weeks post making the site live and getting a good number of users ( essentially word of mouth) , I feel happy for 2 reasons..
a. Starting something from not even the scratch
b. Ability to create a team that delivers
We got covered in alootechie (http://www.alootechie.com/) .. my favourite internet newsletter .. Rajesh Barnwal, his editor gave our subject line in the newsletter he sends everyday! We got 21 comments - allmost all of them positive.. It made me happier. I think we would have broken the maximum number of comments record on alootechie!
Deepti Kaul helped us get some footage in http://www.htnext.in/. Feels good to see the site name across prestigious publications.
See the coverage if you have not seen it already :

I just hope the site does well! Our promoter's faith and his willingness to back us with any kind of support has to be justified!!

Saturn's movement in Leo
Thanks to my Astrospeak days, I get to know deeper things about Astrology than most of my peers. The TV (which I dont see) has supposedly been blaring about Saturn's movement to Leo sign incessantly and since time immemorial.
My belief in astrology is limited. To the extent, that I feel its largely indicative and not definitive. Astrology itself says so. However to be frank, I am also not a member of the so-called Ratioanlist association of India.
Saturn is however one planet, I would rather believe in. Its movement to Leo has seen India see partition and riots in 1947 and emergency in 1977. This is 2007. Eerie 30 years period!
For the lesser mortals like us , doing some things will help us overcome any malefic effects of an otherwise great planet! They are :
1. Live a simple life
2. NO EGO
3. Work hard
4. Help others
5. Leave "Daaru"
6. Take care of parents
People with Leo moonsign need to be careful. It will be good to check what your moonsign is if you do not know it already.
Prayers always help. If you feel that last 1 year or so has been rather tumultous or very expensive for you, you may really be needing the little somethings that prayers add in our lives.

Hiring Criteria
Read an awesome post on the Criteria of Hire by Marc Andreesson.
The main criteria according to him are :
- Drive
- Curiosity
- Ethics
I would largely agree to this.
For those who are in a position to hire or aspire to be in a position to hire, reading this blog will be of immense help.

Truck or the Destiny?
I read with disbelief the passing away of Former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma. I had once met him for some help which he promptly did. SoI carried(and still carry) a favourable impression of him.
When a Truck comes from the other side and hits your vehicle, you cant do much about it. To me, it seems that Truck is just a via media of your destiny.Destiny wants you to meet Yama, the lord of Death.
Weird it may seem, but this is the third accident I have seen of this type. The first one was of my best friend's brother Sanjay Gulati. He died instantly when a truck came from opposite side to hit his car in Sarita Vihar. He had instructed his wife to keep the food ready as he was just 10 minutes away from home! Then I heard about Manav's brother in law. A young promising life cut short. Now the Delhi CM.
All one can do is to pray to Lord to save him from such situations if they ever happen. For believers, I can tell a small Mantra. Say "Narayan - Narayan"before you step out of the door for any outside journey. I have seen this protect me in some of the weirdest accidents I have got into my life. Those instances I will later share.. in this space only.

Food at Karim's, Sector 18 - Noida
I, a perfect 100% vegetarian had my lunch at Karim's,Noida. I had my initial apprehensions on what I would get to eat there but they soon vanished on going through the Menu card.
My companion with me was my old Times FM pal Akash Verma. Our relationship goes back to 13 yyears now. Akash is station director of Red FM that is one of the most popular Radio channels of Delhi. Despite both of us being on the harsher side of 30's, Akash continues to look like a Bomb to members of Opposite gender. Few know that Akash was the Vocalist of a trend setting Rock Band - RED ALERT of Lucknow.
I had a thali called Hari Tashtari and Akash had an Akbari Thali.. Interesting names eh..Good enough Food.
Our talks got distracted when when a very smart young lady walked in to occupy the table next to us. Somehow her companion did not even matter an iota to us. God-made chemistry never changes, I suppose..

Delhi Weather = Good Mood
Howsoever modern we might become, somethings do not change. For example our link with mother nature. If you notice carefully, our moods are quite insync with the weather of the day. Good Weather = Good Mood.
Delhi's weather today is very fine. I hope we see more of these days in coming time. I also want to launch my site Extramarks( www.extramarks.com) quickly so that I am able to take an off the next time weather becomes so divine!

Online Networking: Can it replace Offline one?
Linkedin rocks! So do Orkut and Hi5. There are people who believe that social networking sites will not work in India. I think differently. Youngsters throng to Orkut and Hi5 like nobody's business.
But one key question remains unanswered. Will there be a time when Online networking will replace offline one? If you think deep, you will get the answer though not a definitive one. Messengers are also like social networking tools only and most of us remain in touch with others through them mostly. Offline we hardly meet. So Online has replaced Offline here!
I think, networking sites that have a distinct thread that can form the basis of a community building will succeed. Extramarks.com (http://www.extramarks.com/) , the site we will launch in early July will have Education as that binding thread. Lets see if it works!

Online Education? Time for India Internet Industry
One of the most under utilized domains in Internet remains Education. India seems even more laggard in this field.
In about 10 years of Internet, we are yet to see a big name or brand in Online education. Educomp seems good but they are much more stronger offline. Indiatimes started well early in 2000 but somehow learning lost to Photo gallery as Internet touched a low during bubble burst time. There are a very few good niche sites exisiting but no marketing seems to be being done about them.
We are planning to launch a site called extramarks ( http://www.extramarks.com). Lets see how this fares. My gut feel says that it will do well.

The Prez Poll becomes a Political affair again!
CHANGED MY OPINION
Read SN's blog and read what Arun Shourie has written about Ms Patil. She no longer seems a "good and down to earth" person!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Congress's method of selecting President seems to be the same old one!
I have nothing against Mrs Patil. She appears to be a good, down to earth person however the methodology adopted by Congress is same old one..i.e choose any one who has got loyality to the Gandhi family and then masquarade the decision as a moral stance!
Its a pity that Middle class has no say in Presidential elections. Despite its rooting for Prez Kalam, Congress and Left have chosen to let their plea be fallen on deaf ears.. just becoz Kalam got elected while BJP ruled the centre. What a logic!
